ABSTRACT
This project examines the causes, impacts, and government responses to youth unemployment in Edo State since 1999. The causes of youth unemployment include a skill gap, limited job opportunities, and economic factors such as structural changes, technological advancements, and population growth. The education system's inability to equip graduates with necessary skills and social and cultural factors also contribute to the issue. The impacts of youth unemployment are far-reaching, affecting the economy, society, politics, and individuals. It leads to a loss of productivity, brain drain, and reduced economic output, as well as social vices, crime rates, and erosion of traditional values. Personal impacts include strained relationships, mental health issues, substance abuse, and erosion of skills and employability. The Edo State Government has implemented various initiatives to address youth unemployment, including vocational training, awareness programs, and collaborations with external partners. Past administrations have focused on direct employment, vocational training, and partnerships, while the current administration emphasizes educational reform, job creation, and skills development. Programs like the EDOJOBS, EDSIP and N-POWER aim to provide training and job opportunities. The outcomes propose that endeavors such as vocational instruction, entrepreneurship encouragement, and community-oriented reintegration schemes are imperative in diminishing youth unemployment and fostering sustainable job prospects for the youths of Edo State. Recommendations include refining existing programs, creating more job opportunities, and leveraging the internet age for employment. The project concludes that the government's efforts are steps in the right direction, but there is a need for more practical solutions and a cultural shift towards self-reliance and productivity among the youth.
