ABSTRACT
The persistent issue of youth unemployment in Nigeria poses significant challenges to political stability within the country, raising concerns over increased incidence of social unrest, criminal activities and radicalization. This study elucidates the nexus between high youth unemployment rates and political instability in Nigeria, providing empirical insight into the magnitude of the problem and its implications for national security and governance. The research employs a quantitative methods approach, through the use of appropriate research design, sampling method and data collection techniques. The study also draws on several theoretical frameworks of structural functionalism and relative deprivation theory to elucidate the mechanism through which unemployment may exacerbate political instability. Findings indicate that youth unemployment in Nigeria has been caused by many factors like economic conditions among others, correlating strongly with increased incidence of social unrest, criminal activities and insurgency. Based on these findings, the study recommends comprehensive policy intervention, investment in quality education and vocational training aimed at addressing the root causes of youth unemployment in Nigeria.
