ABSTRACT
Promoting youth representation in politics has become a pressing global priority, with Nigeria at the forefront of this movement. The successful mobilization of youth organizations led to the passage of the Not Too Young to Run law, a constitutional reform that lowered the eligibility age to run for political office. This law aimed to promote youth leadership and more inclusive politics, recognizing the significant proportion of young people in Nigeria, with nearly 70% of the population below 35 years old. Research on Nigerian youth participation in politics and governance revealed a modest increase in youth aspirants and occupants of elective offices in the 2019 general elections. To further enhance youth participation, recommendations include establishing a strong agent of socialization, forming youth-led coalitions of political parties, setting a minimum percentage of youth candidates for each party, and creating an enabling environment for youth engagement. These measures are crucial in harnessing the potential of Nigeria's youthful population and fostering a more representative democracy.
