ABSTRACT
This research work titled "Word formation processes in urhobo language", aims at showing how the words in the language is formed and what processes used in the formation of Urhobo words. This study is based on a Morphological approach and the theoretical framework for this investigative study, is obtained from Beards, 2009 "lexeme/Morpheme Based Morphology ( LMBM)" which talks about Inflectional morphology and Dixon's 1997 basic linguistics theory which talks about the grammatical description of languages. This work is divided into five chapters.
Chapter one is basically the introductory part which contains the background of the study, methodology and theoretical framework, statement of the problem, purpose or aims and objectives of the study and significance of the study /justification of the study. Chapter two contains the literatures reviewed in the course of the study. Here we define the different terms used in investing the types of Morphological processes or word formation processes in Urhobo language and this talks about Inflectional morphology and how the different terms are used. Some of these terms are Preffixation, suprafixation, Reduplication etc. In Chapter three, we go deeper into the study and this time, we present our data. The data presented, is in orthographic form and it is represented phonetically also. In chapter four ,we analyze our data and this is based on a morphological approach because it deals with the formation of words and examine some of the findings we had in the course of the study and the words used to make ownership e.g òmé ‘mine’, òvwé‘yours’ , words used to ask questions e.g ònò‘who’ , dié‘what’, words produced by combining two words some of these words are done by inserting an ' r' in between them e.g eséòghéné - èséròghéné while others are just joined together without any additional letter and other processes used in the work then , finally in chapter five ,we conclude the work and give our recommendations.
