SUMMARY
This study has proved that women played an important role in the development of Ekpoma in pre-colonial times. Economically, division of labour was along gender lines, and women controlled such occupations as food processing, mat weaving, pottery making, and cooking. Moreover, land was communally owned, and women had access to it through their husbands or parents. Although a man was the head of the household in a patrilineal system, older women had control of the labour of younger family members. Women were also involved in trade with enormous opportunities for accumulating wealth and influence. However, they were mostly active in the local trade because of the dangers of embarking on the long distance which involve moving across the forest, and also leaving their children on the long period that the trade would take. The most successful among women who participated actively in any aspect of these trade rose to the prestigious position of great privilege and power.
