SUMMARY

Throughout history, women have contributed to the socio-economic and political development of their societies. The social and economic status of women in pre-colonial Oporomaland is superior to other cultures in Nigeria. Their role has however not been given proper academic attention. Although in more recent times, there had been a proliferation of academic works on the history of Oporoma women. Nevertheless, the success story of Oporomaland will not be complete without mentioning the role of women in the pre-colonial era. From various viewpoints, Oporoma women in precolonial Oporomaland did a lot for the society in which she lived. Women at that time were very good traders and this boosted the economy. Women were also good in handicraft, which also enhanced the social and cultural aspects of pre-colonial Oporoma society. In pre-colonial times, a woman who was without a craft or trade or who was very dependent on her husband was not only rare but also regarded with contempt.
