WOMEN AND PROTESTS IN POST-COLONIAL NIGERIA

SUMMARY

This paper attempted to examine the impact and relevance of women and protests in postcolonial Nigeria on particular reference to the EndSARS protest. This paper captioned the historical framework and theoretical perspective on relevance of protest, exploits of women, the role of the police, and effects of police brutality. This paper focuses more on the remote causes that led to the outburst of the EndSARS protest and how the protest has made a significant impact especially on Nigeria, socio-politically. It has also highlighted the role specific women played in ensuring the solidity and doggedness of the protest. The essence of protest all over the world is to ensure that the demands of the people are effectively being communicated to the government, and to ensure that the government or leadership authorities are doing what is expected of them by their citizens, and when these duties and obligations are not duly met, the citizens have the rights and authority to speak up, request or question the capabilities and responsibilities of their leaders. However, in Nigeria for decades the opposite has been the case, in that the those in power seek to remain in power without fulfilling their responsibilities as expected, due to corruption, greed, etc., and expect not to be questioned or held accountable.
