WINDSTORM IMPACTS AND ADAPTATION STRATEGIES IN EGOR LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE, NIGERIA

ABSTRACT

This study was carried out in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State to evaluate windstorms, their impacts, and strategies used by residents to adapt. Survey research design was adopted in the study. A total of 400 copies of questionnaire were administered using random sampling method and systematic technique, while the data was presented in frequency tables, pie charts and frequency counts. The study examined patterns in wind speed over a five-year period for the Egor Local Government Area. The study highlights the annual wind speed trends as well as monthly wind speed trends during a period of five years. The study reveals economic losses as the most significant impact caused by windstorms in the area. In addition to financial damages, windstorms also led to the displacement of individuals, family members, and entire communities. Other notable consequences included destruction of trees and vegetation, as well as power outages. The study also reveals various adaptation strategies employed by both individuals and communities, the most wide spread approaches involved staying indoors during windstorm, turning off electrical devices, raising public awareness about windstorm and providing aid and supports those affected. However, there is need for improvements mainly on long-term strategies that may require more resource, coordination and planning which include assembling emergency kits, planting of trees and establishing evacuation routes and shelters. Recommendations include promoting community awareness and preparedness, factoring extreme weather events into urban planning and fostering collaboration among government agencies, NGO's and community-based organizations. Overall, the research provide insights into existing impacts of windstorms, emphasizing targeted interventions to mitigate its adverse effects and enhance quality of Egor Local Government Area.
