WHERE DO THE LOST SOCKS GO?

ABSTRACT

The unfair and unjust treatment of certain set of citizens in our country was a big blow to the existence of norms, orders, customs, traditions, doctrines, laws and fundamental principles of human rights. Due to the hierarchies of wealth and double standards present in Nigeria, the less privileged and the lower classes were denied true justice and their rights were impaled. The last hope of the poor masses called "Judiciary", who was mandated to uphold the integrity of the "lady justice" was found wanting and enslaved by the crumbs of the wealthy people's pockets. Double standards posed a big problem in the society as it defeated the purpose of equality before the law, thereby inviting resentment and frustration which has led to more restiveness in the society and also encouraged the division between the favored and disfavored. Hence the need for this research, "Where do the lost socks go?: A painterly representation of the negative double standards in the Nigerian society" narrative which emphasized on the menace of double standards in our society today. This paper aimed to visually represent the negative double standards in the Nigerian societies through painting to rejuvenate the awareness in the minds of the public the suffering of the masses. Its objective was to resolve and suggest using the medium of painting to proffer positive solutions on the need to bring to spot-light, enlightening the society and exploring ways to reduce, curb and curtail unfair application of policies or rules even in our immediate environment.
