ABSTRACT
This project work is concerned with the study of WH-Movement in Ugbawka Igbo, a dialect of Nkanu in Nkanu-East Local Government in Enugu State. It focuses on a kind of WH-Question words and their characteristics.
DATA COLLECTION TECHNIQUE
The data used in this study may be referred to as primary data (Okolo, 2008:93).
The methods for collecting the data for this research through series 0f interviews and questionnaire with a native speaker and by direct observation {Okolo, 2008:116}. Also, I am a native speaker of the dialect of Igbo spoken in Ugbawka, and my native speaker intelligence proved to be an invaluable asset in collecting data used for this research.
This study hopes to investigate WH-movement in WH-Questions in Ugbawka dialect of Igbo, with a view to analyzing their inherent characteristics and peculiarities.
HYPOTHESIS INVESTIGATED
The two hypotheses investigated in this study are those of grammar which fall into prescriptive grammar and which proposes that all languages function in some established manner, such that the grammar of certain languages can be imposed on others structurally. And “structural grammar” which portends that every language is unique and needs to be analyzed in its own light with data drawn from native speakers without reference to any other language as a standard.
This study to show that the Nkanu dialect is a homogenous dialect of Igbo, by emphasizing Ugbawka Igbo’s uniqueness as a dialect of Nkanu.
