ABSTRACT
The importance of hotels in this age where travelling is now very easy, fast and affordable cannot be overemphasised as they serve as home away from home for most people. This study was aimed as assessing the waste generation and waste management practices which are employed by hotels located within Benin City, Nigeria. A total of thirty (30) hotels were randomly selected and data collection was done via a structured questionnaire. The data collected was analysed using descriptive statistics (frequencies). The results obtained showed that a higher number of the hotels assessed have been in operation for between 6 to 10 years. The major type of waste generated in the hotels were plastic (86.7%) and food wastes (76.7%). The use of waste bins was the most common method (66.7%) to store waste prior to disposal. Only waste reduction was widely applied among the waste management hierarchy in the hotels assessed. The waste management method used by the hotels include landfilling, incineration and open dumping. The government Waste Management Board does majority of the waste disposal with the most common frequency being on a weekly basis (56.7%). Most respondents (73,3%) reported that their hotel complied with regulations relating to waste management and nearly all respondent were of the opinion that their hotel waste management practices were efficient. However, measures to further improve waste management in hotels include proper implementation of waste segregation and waste management hierarchy for all forms of waste and raising awareness on proper waste management methods for hotels to adopt.
