Voters’ Perceptions of Election Management in Nigeria

ABSTRACT

This study compares the performance of INEC in the management of electoral processes in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections in Nigeria. It specifically assessed the voters’ perceptions of election management in Nigeria and explored the difference in the implementation of Electoral Acts and other processes by INEC for the presidential election in 2015 than in 2019 The study adopts survey research design. It relied on both primary and secondary sources of data. The population size is 9,864,147 while the sample size is 2,102. The sampling techniques are simple and stratified random. It adopted t-test statistical technique for data analysis. Based on the investigation and analysis, the study found that INEC performed slightly better in the 2019 presidential election than 2015. However, it was discovered that there were no significant differences in the performance of the electoral umpire in terms of task execution, target accomplishment and goal realization in both elections. Flowing from the findings, recommendations in terms of professional staff development, effective communication with stakeholders, voter education, and maintenance of decorum by political parties were made as ways to ensure improved progression in the management of electoral processes in the future.
