Abstract
This study was carried out to find how vote buying and money politics impacts Nigerian democracy deploying the 2019 gubernatorial contest in Edo State and using the three metropolitan areas of the state which include: Egor, Ikpoba-Okha and Oredo as case study. The study utilized chronological assessment and analysis of the conduct and quality of elections from the colonial era to the present day highlighting the implications of a faulty and undesirable electoral process in Nigeria. Using the primary source of data, relevant qualitative data were generated and analyzed. In this regard, the study revealed that the Edo state governorship election of 2019 was overshadowed by financial inducement of the electorates, which is believed to have been caused by poverty and ignorance. In light of this, the study recommends amongst others that the issue of poverty should be tackled seriously. The need for agencies charged with the responsibility for fighting corruption to act jointly with all financial institutions in election period so as to keep track of how cash is moved was equally recommended.
