VIOLENCE AS RESPONSE TO OPPRESSION

SUMMARY

This study has critically examine the presence and use of Violence by the oppresed to eradicate Oppression and overcome the evil vices , maltreatment , intimidation and frustration enforced on them by the oppresors who inflicts pains on them in the community. The novel reflects realistic events that can be seen in our society as portrayed by the characters from the two novels; American Psycho by Brett Ellis Easton and African Psycho by Alain Mabanckou. For example: Angoualima fights violently by all means to ensure that he frees himself from the government, political leaders and the society's humiliations by breaking the societal rules, principle which is structured in a way that it only favours those who are rich and in power. He is proud of the fact that he is able to "shit" on the society and make the oppressors powerless. Another instance is vividly portrayed by Gregoire Nakobomayo and Patrick Bateman who indulges in violent activities as the only way to meet up with the high standard of their community. In a situation where the rich and politically relevant personnel like Fernandes Quiroga gets his wealth by lies and deceitfully selling off his client's properties,which is also a way of treating them unfairly, likewise, oppressing them , Gregoire dealt with him by violently attacking him at his office with the motive of stealing the money he(Fernandes) has extorted from innocent clients. This act by Gregoire produced a positive result,as Fernandes Quiroga later leaves the community. The writers of the novels has actively recommend the possible solution to Oppression in our society as nothing else,but Violence. Violence speaks louder than endurance, being quiet or succumbing to the wiles of the oppressor. It frees a man from unfavourable condition or circumstances he or she might find himself.
