ABSTRACT
Over the years , there has been a movement towards creating buildings that are self sustaining, buildings that contain spaces which enhance human comfort and increased productivity among occupants, which vernacular architecture, as a style of architecture is known for. The research is aimed at bridging the gap between low income earners and quality housing. The rationale behind this is due to the high cost of building construction at the moment, primarily due to the high cost of building materials, in which most of the building materials are imported from far sources. The research is undertaken as a measure to reduce homelessness, slum creation and curb urban area menace, because vernacular architecture can effectively be practiced in our rural areas, thereby reducing rural-urban migration. The research will be carried out through case studies of identified vernacular buildings in Benin city, discussions with occupants and obtaining the needed information and data. The data will be used to analyse the cost of building materials, sources of building materials, construction technique, thermal comfort of occupants and the energy consumed by the buildings.
