ABSTRACT
Obesity (BMI ≥ 30kg/m2) is common in the general population and has been associated with many disorders, therefore making it a prime public health issue (Abdollahi et al., 2003). Over the years Obesity and overweight have considerable effects on the occurrence of a variety of disorders, such as coronary artery disease, hypertension, arthrosis, type II diabetes (Hubert et al., 1983) and a risk factors for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or as correlates of coagulation factors concentrations. The aim of this study was to evaluate the concentration of Factor VIII in young obese females. A population of 60 healthy subjects from the University of Benin within the age 18-30 years was used for this experiment and they were grouped into two groups: 30 non obese serving as the control subjects and 30 subjects serving as the test subjects. It was carried out across university of Benin environment in Benin City. The subjects was asked to fill a questionnaire which contained information such as their age, weight and height in order to calculate their body mass index. Blood was drawn through venepuncture via the medial cubital vein into sodium citrate tubes. The results of the study revealed a significant increase in the adipose tissue mass through the BMI between the test subjects and the control subjects although these are young and apparently healthy subjects. From this study, obesity was shown to cause an increase in coagulation factor viii concentration in young obese females.
