ABSTRACT
This study investigates the potential of biochar as a sustainable and cost-effective adsorbent for purifying greywater in Benin City, Nigeria. Biochar was produced from locally available biomass and employed in a glass filter column packed with aggregates of varying sizes. Greywater was passed through the column, and the quality of the effluent was compared to the influent. Parameters such as Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), turbidity, Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), ammonia, nitrate, and phosphorus were monitored to assess the effectiveness of the biochar filter. Results indicated that the biochar successfully removed a significant amount of impurities from the greywater, leading to a noticeable improvement in the overall water quality index. However, while the biochar filter demonstrated promising results, the treated greywater still did not meet drinking water standards. Further research is necessary to optimize the filter design, biochar properties, and operational conditions to achieve higher levels of purification and ensure the safety of the treated water for potential reuse.
