UTILIZATION OF LIFE SKILLS TRAINING IN ADULT LITERACY PROGRAMMES

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the Utilization of Life Skills Training in Adult Literacy Programmes in Ikpoba-Okha local government area of Edo State. Four (4) research questions were raised to guide the study.

A total of Two Hundred (200) respondents were selected for the study through simple random sampling techniques. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the Department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques consisting of Tables, frequencies counts, and percentages

Findings of the study revealed that the available that the available training programmes for employees in the area are; self-awareness, empathy, critical thinking, creative thinking, decision making, problem-solving, interpersonal relationship, effective communication, coping with stress and coping with emotions.  It was also revealed integration of life skills training within adult literacy programmes holds significant potential for enhancing learners' personal and social development. The diverse range of life skills identified, including self-awareness, creative thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication, underscores the comprehensive approach to building learners' capabilities. It was further recommended that for facilitators to ensure they are adequately prepared to deliver effective life skills training. It was also recommended that collaboration with community organizations is pivotal to enrich the delivery of life skills training. Strong partnerships with local NGOs, businesses, and community groups can provide additional resources, expertise, and support to enhance the learning experience for adult learners.
