ABSTRACT

This study delves into the pervasive issue of performance-enhancing drug (PED) use among construction workers in Edo State, particularly in Benin City. With a focus on understanding its impact on productivity, the research encompasses a multifaceted approach. The primary objectives are to systematically evaluate the prevalence and types of PEDs used, assess the associated risks, explore the intricate relationship between PED usage and productivity, and propose practical measures for managing and mitigating PED use among construction workers.

Methodologically, a comprehensive data collection strategy involving structured questionnaires and in-depth interviews was employed. This methodology facilitated a nuanced understanding of the complexities surrounding PED usage in the construction industry context.

The significance of this study is multifaceted. Firstly, it contributes significantly to the body of knowledge regarding PED use in construction, shedding light on an often overlooked aspect of workplace dynamics. Secondly, the findings offer valuable insights for contractors, project supervisors, and industry stakeholders in comprehensively addressing PED-related challenges, thereby enhancing overall productivity and safety on construction sites.

The research findings underscore several critical points. Firstly, they highlight the top five perceived risks associated with PED use, including health impairments, hallucinations, dizziness, reduced concentration, and diminished work quality. These findings resonate with existing literature, particularly the work of Roche et al. (2020), which emphasizes the incompatibility of certain PEDs with the demanding nature of construction work due to safety hazards and performance decrements.

In summary, this study serves as a pivotal resource for understanding the nuanced interplay between PED use and productivity in the construction sector, offering actionable insights for fostering a safer, more productive work environment.
