ABSTRACT

Medicinal plants are beneficial in the management of several disease conditions including male sexual dysfunction (MSD). The secondary effects, high cost and unavailability of drugs used in treating MSD have necessitated the search for alternative and complementary treatment from nature.

In this research work, phytochemical screening of A. senegalensis root, stem and leaves were performed and revealed the presence of tannins, saponins, flavonoids, terpenoids, steroids and reducing sugars. The administration of the crude extracts improved male sexual performance in male albino rats with the root extract. Also, the crude extracts produced anti-lipid peroxidation activity at different concentrations. Root extract exhibited the highest aphrodisiac activity and the highest anti-lipid peroxidation potential among the three morphological organs studied.
