ABSTRACT
This essay shows how Odia Ofeium and Kola Eke use their poetry to reveal tyrant and tyranny within a given society. In the course of the essay’s analysis, we see that there are three type of tyranny that the two poets under study look at. These are tyranny of minority, tyranny of majority and tyranny of custom/tradition.
In analyzing each kind of tyranny, the poets use poetry to expose how the minority can unleash tyrannous actions against the people. In the same manner, there is also a demonstration of how the majority can influence tyranny against the people, while the tyranny of custom/tradition is portrayed through African Traditional Society and these societies adapt custom/tradition that militates against womenhood and widowhood status especially during the process of mourning and funeral for a departed husband male-leader of a family.
Odia Ofeimun and Kola Eke demonstrate their capacity use poetry to --- tyranny. The study shows that they succeeded in using poetic language and devices such as metaphor, repetition, simile, folklore as well as imagery to enlighten the reader on the state of tyranny.
