ABSTRACT
This study examines the translation challenges encountered by translators in translating texts into English texts. The objective of the study were to identify the challenges that pose difficulties to see translators and the strategies employed by translators to overcome the translation challenges. This study uses qualitative research design with a descriptive paradigm. The study is anchored on Descriptive Translation Studies Data for the study were collected from translated texts from Esan into English. Oral interview was also conducted among enlightened Esan people on translation challenges facing the translation texts into English texts. Data collected were analysed descriptively .
The findings of the study were that translators face a lot of challenges ranging from syntactic problems, semantics problems, phonological problems, grammatical problems to problems of translating culture-bound words. The study also found that the translators employ the following strategies to overcome the translation challenges facing them; retention, explication, borrowing, adaptation as well as paraphrasing. The study makes recommendations for further studies on the translating challenges to include a wider geographical area.
