ABSTRACT
This work is a study of the translation of proverbs from Yekhee to English using an appropriate mode l, the problems encountered in the process of translating and suggested ways to solving the problem s .The aim is also to know the level which is best for proverbs translation from Yekhee to English so as to arrive at at the same message which the communicator is trying to pass across to the communicate .Also to accomplish a better understanding of translation.
The theoretical framework for analysis in the present study is that Performative Translatology as proposed by Uwajeh (2001). This theory derive strictly from the scientific orientation in modern linguistics called “Performative Grammar”. The performative translatology was adopted due to its explanatory power to account for the levels of translation.
The data collected for this present study were gotten from two sources: The primary and secondary source. The primary data were gotten from competent native speakers of Yekhee language through oral interviews, while the secondary data were gotten from published work of Emike Acheoah (2003) “The fundamentals of Yekhee Rhetoric”.
After an extensive analysis of the Yekhee of Yekhee proverbs into English, the researcher finds out that some words are not translatable which then result into borrowing or direct lifting of those words.
The researcher also finds out that culture of both languages has to be put into consideration. Yekhee culture is totally different from that of English which therefore result into cultural differences.
This study will help translators especially those interested in translating proverbs in Yekhee to English language to know the best model and the most preferred level so as to attain equivalence in the target language.
The researcher recommends that students of translation especially those who much interested in the translation of Yekhee proverbs to English as it will will be of great significance to them.
