TRAINING, DEVELOPMENT AND ORGANIZATIONAL PERFORMANCE AMONG SELECTED LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCILS IN DELTA STATE

ABSTRACT

The study focused on how employee training and development influence organizational performance among selected local government councils in Delta State. The specific objectives are to: establish the extent to which selection procedure of employee affects organizational performance; ascertain how training design affects organizational performance and to know whether training delivery style for employees affects organizational performancein their selected local government councils in Delta State.

The study adopted survey research design because the sampled elements and the variables under investigation were observed without any attempt to control or manipulate them. The population comprised of employees on the payroll of the selected local government as at 2018. As at January 2018, the staff strength for the two selected local government councils was 1151 (Human and capital unit, 2018). The sample size were determined using Yaro Yamane’s formula which were based on the population strength of the local governement as at 2018. Based on this the sample size was as 297 which formed the basis for analyses. Structured questionnaire were used to obtain detailed information from the respondents. The study used primary data as the main source of information.

The study revealed that there is significant relationship between selection procedure, training design and training delivery as the measures for training and development against organizational performance. The study supported other empirical literature on impact of training and development and organizational performance (Nwanzu & uche-Okolo (2017); and Uyeri (2016). The study recomended that Administrators of local governments should know that learning through training and development influences organizational performance and was observed to be a key factor in the achievement of corporate goals and objectives.
