ABSTRACT
An effective analysis of traffic surveys serves as a driving force for attaining effective and progressive transportation planning and promoting sustainable urban growth. It is necessary to carry out traffic volume study often in order to have up to date information of traffic conditions on major roads. Lack of current traffic data for proper planning lead to significant socio-economic repercussions, including traffic congestion, increased criminal activities, and a rise in traffic accidents. This study examined the traffic volume on Ugbowo-Lagos Road, Benin City, Edo state. The project was aimed at determining the vehicle composition on this route and their percentage volume. In order to determine the traffic volume for the various days of the week and estimate an average daily traffic volume, the use of manual traffic count method for estimation of traffic volume and flow pattern was adopted. The traffic data gathered were presented and analyzed using Average Daily Traffic (ADT) computations and Passenger Car Equivalents (PCE). The results showed that the percentage of Cars (privately owned vehicles) plying this route is significantly higher than other vehicle types at a value of 58.53%. The percentage of commercial buses on this route was seen to be 39.18%. Findings also revealed that the traffic volume on this route is most on Monday with an average of 3478 veh/hr, inbound and outbound. The least volume was observed to be on Sunday with an average of 2895 veh/hr. The average daily traffic computed from the data collected for the week shows that there is an average of 49721 passenger car units per day plying this route.
