SUMMARY

The essay is based on the use of traditional symbols to illustrate love in Osundare and Shakespeare’s poetry. From our analysis of selected poems by both poets, we have found that both of them make use of tradition symbols of love such as; celestial, aquatic, animal and agricultural to portray theme of love. These symbols when used by these writers have a major effect in the presentation of the poems. They help these writers to express their emotions and drive home the overall theme of the work. Aside from this, the use of the traditional symbols, can change the structure of the poems by elevating them to greater heights.
