SUMMARY
The essay is based on the use of traditional symbols to illustrate love in Osundare and Shakespeare’s poetry. From our analysis of selected poems by both poets, we have found that both of them make use of tradition symbols of love such as; celestial, aquatic, animal and agricultural to portray theme of love. These symbols when used by these writers have a major effect in the presentation of the poems. They help these writers to express their emotions and drive home the overall theme of the work. Aside from this, the use of the traditional symbols, can change the structure of the poems by elevating them to greater heights.
Celestial symbols used by Osundare and Shakespeare, range from the sun, the moon to the stars and sky. The use of any of these symbols by both poets elevates their work and gives their poem an extra-ordinary elevation. The predominantly used celestial symbol by both poets remains the solar symbol. The infusion of this symbol allows the poets to pass their messages easily. This is because the traditional symbol of the sun represents a lot of concepts and can be interpreted to carry a lot of messages. The same can be said about the lunar symbol, which is another predominantly used symbol. This symbol is known to represent: birth, rebirth, regeneration and life itself. Thus it is used by the poets to buttress the theme of love as well as the theme of time.
