ABSTRACT
The study investigated the total hydrocarbon content, fatty acid profile and heavy metal level in Irvingia gabonensis seed oil. The Irvingia gabonensis seed oil was extracted using a seed to oil Extraction Machine. The oil was subjected to different types of spectrophotometry to get the total hydrocarbon content, heavy metal levels and fatty acid profile. The total hydrocarbon content was gotten as 0.00825mg/kg. The Heavy metals present were Iron (Fe) with concentration level of 0.965 ± 0.015. Zinc, concentration level 4.77± 0.21. Lead, with concentration level 0.025±0.005. Copper, with a concentration level of 0.25± 0.01. Nickel, with a concentration level of 0.85±0.05. Cobalt with a concentration level of 0.135±0.005, Chromium with the concentration level of 0.09±0.01. Fatty acids present were myristic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid, linoleic, of which stearic acid is more abundant. In conclusion, the Irvingia gabonensis seed oil had a low level of carbon impurities, abundant level of saturated fatty acid and is safe for the consumption and industrial use.
