ABSTRACT
This study examines tone system of Afikpo dialect of Igbo. It adopts the framework of Autosegmental phonology under which Afikpo tone system is analysed. This study sets out to investigate the tone system of Afikpo dialect of Igbo to know whether there is similarities with earlier work done on Igbo in general. The data are collected through personal interview. Three respondents are selected. The Ibadan word-list of basic items was used and the data was recorded, transcribed and analysed. It reveals that contour tones are seen at lexical level in Afikpo tone which following earlier studies and consideration that contour tones in Igbo are derived only in associative constructions.
