ABSTRACT
This study evaluates the themes and techniques of selected poems. It examines how these themes are exploited through the use of techniques, and how they are used in various poems to further drive home the point being passed in the poem. Examining how the various poems take up their theme, or central message from social or political vices on the society. The Primary source needed for this study is COVID-19 and Other Poems, February 1976 and Other Poems, and May 27 and Other Poems. Further data was obtained from personal notes, and analysis, and analysis also done by the lecturer. The research underwent thematic analysis. During the study, it is understood that by applying Stephen Greenblatt's New Historicism theory, we are able to see the ideologies being passed by the writer, through his poems. Further study shows that these ideologies are used to showcase or bring out the ills in the society. The findings conclude that Literature is not just a piece of art, but a piece of art that shows the relationship between the literary work and history, bringing out its social vices, relating to the time of the writer. The study concludes that the works in this study not only show how information can be passed through literature, but also it serves as a wakeup call. Directing the reader on the social vices in the country.
