ABSTRACT
Previous studies on hip-hop was on code switching, language mixing and fused lects, while this study centre on the use of Igbo language in Nigerian hip-hop and rap culture following the theoretical framework of Muysken (2000) 'intra-sentential code mixing', where he talked about the concept of insertion, congruent lexicalization and alternation. This framework will be used to show the linguistic relevant of Igbo hip-hop genre.
Data collection is gotten from audio CD's of the following artistes Phyno, Splash, Zoro, Don Jazzy, Slim Brown, Gentle etc. The analysis will be based on Muysken (2000) theoretical framework and figurative expressions.
The findings of this study, reveals that the use of entertainment can serve as a very effective language planning strategy.
In conclusion, having discovered that entertainment can be used for language planning, it is best to be encouraged.
