THE TONES IN EDO LANGUAGE PEDAGOGY

ABSTRACT

This project reviews the tones in Ẹdo language pedagogy. The aim of this project work is to analyse and bring out the various phonological processes that occur In Ẹdo language during the course of this work. In chapter one the background of study follwed by. The theoritical framework used In this work is the autosegmental which was propounded by Goldsmith (1975), Ọmọzuwa V.E (1989, 1996) and other scholars who were also cited during the course of this research, the autosegmental theory is used because it best accounts for the study of tones through the use of the CV Skeletal through the use of association lines in a segment. The technique used for the collection of data was carefully selecting the data from Ọmọzuwa V. E (2010) Ẹdo Phonetics and Phonilogye. From the findings of the work, it is noted that Ẹdo language is a contour tone language, vowel and consonant elision takes place nasalization, glide formation e.t.c occurs In Ẹdo language which sbould be put into consideration while teaching and learning. This project is divided into five chapters which is explained and analysed In the various sections of this work. The autosegmental phonological representation is simple and economically explicit. Vowels, consonant and tones atẹ prepresented on separate tiers and are shown by association lines. With this phonological framework, a better account for suprasegment is given. Crystal (1987:173) “it is possible to change the meaning of words simply by changing the pitch level at which it is spoken. Languages that allow this is known as tone language”.
