ABSTRACT
This study investigated the ulcer healing potential of ethanol extract of unripe Musa Paradisiaca fruit on aspirin induced gastric ulceration in male albino Wistar rats. Twenty-four (24) male wistar rats were divided in to six (6) groups of four rats each. Group 1 was administered 2ml/kg distilled water orally (normal control), Group 2 was administered with 150mg/200g body weight aspirin orally (negative control), Group 3-5 were administered with 150mg/200g body weight aspirin orally prior to treatment with 800mg/kg, 400mg/kg and 200mg/kg body weight of the ethanolic extract of unripe Musa paradisiaca respectively. Group 6 was treated with 5mg/kg with standard drug (omeprazole). From the result, it shows that there was no significant decrease (P>0.05) in mean initial body weight in the test groups when compared to the control group. There was a significant decrease (P<0.05) in mean final Body weight (B. wt.) in the untreated group and a significant increase (P<0.05) in the group that received 5mg/kg body weight of standard drug, omeprazole when compared with the control group. There was also a significant decrease in change of body weight in the untreated group when compared with the control group. The mean ulcer index in the untreated group was significantly higher than the group that received 200mg/kg B.wt of extract and 5mg/kg B.wt of standard drug. The group that received 200mg/kg B.wt of extract had the highest % ulcer inhibition. However, treatment with ethanolic extract of Musa paradisiaca fruit significantly reduced ulcer index in dose dependent manner. There was a significant increase (P<0.05) in kidney/body weight ratio and liver/body weight ratio in the untreated group when compared with the control group. From the study, it can be deduced the unripe Musa paradisiaca fruit have ulcer healing potential and should be recommended as an ideal diet for individuals on high risk category for gastric ulcer resulting from Non Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID) treatment.
