Queen Iden, also referred to as Iden Nokpokhuo, was Oba Ewuakpe’s devoted and beloved spouse. She epitomized love, strength, courage, and African femininity. In a time of calamity, she stood as Ewuakpe’s sole source of comfort. Seeking to rectify the tragedy, Queen Iden consulted an oracle, learning that a human sacrifice was required. Unable to find a suitable candidate, she courageously volunteered herself, a remarkable act considering her royal status. Queen Iden’s sacrifice saved the monarchy and restored stability. Her legacy, along with other extraordinary women, contributed to the enduring strength of the Benin monarchy. Ewuakpe’s constitutional reforms further solidified this stability, drawing lessons from the challenges he faced at the beginning of his rule. Her sacrifice is often celebrated as a demonstration of selflessness and dedication to the well-being of the community. It's important to note that historical accounts and interpretations of Queen Iden’s sacrifice may vary, but her legacy remains a vital part of Benin Kingdom's cultural and historical narrative.
