ABSTRACT

Water (Ground water and surface water) is precious and necessary for a sustainable economic development of an area as it is the next major support to life after air. This research was carried out around Oda town and it’s environment, which lies between longitude 5° 13’ 30”E and 5° 14’ 30.7”and latitude 7° 09’ 50” and 7° 12’ 20”N. Random sampling technique was employed in choosing water samples from the surface and groundwater in parts of Oda town and its environment. Standard methods were used to determine the physiochemical, bacterialogical and heavy metals were determined using the Atomic absorption spectrometer. The pH valve ranges between 6.6-7.2 which shows that the water in the study area is slightly neutral.  Physiochemical parameters TDS and COD valves of some locations with range 144mg/l and 10-17.1mg/l respectively were above the WHO permissible limit. The results of the study showed heavy metal concentration in ground water with Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Cr, and Pb having a range of 0.1-0.6, 0.01-0.04, 0.9-5.0, 0.1-0.4, 0.1-0.04, and 0.1-0.2 respectively with microbes like E. coli, S. aureus, B. subtilis, and Salmonella spp. are present in the water system of the study area. The results gotten from the study of the ground and surface water in Oda showed the water quality in this area to be generally potable, due to the concentration of heavy metals being mostly under/within the WHO standard regulation.
