ABSTRACT
The study is a preference analysis of the structure of Ẹdo nouns. It examined the validity of hybridized nouns in Ẹdo. It also account for the phonological structure (tonal and syllable patterns), the effect of hybridization and the formation of hybrid strategies in Ẹdo. Data for this study were gathered from the youths in Benin City as well as published works in the Ẹdo language and other relevant texts. The framework for the study was based on preference grammar. At the phonological level, the data were examined to determine whether the hybridized structure is different from the conventional structure as evident in Ẹdo. At the phonetic level, the study examined how the hybridized forms are pronounced, if it tallies with the conventional way. The study found that strategies were used in the hybridization of nouns in the language. The strategies were classified into various categories: (i) elision of vowel (initial, middle and final), (ii) consonant clusters in Ẹdo Loanwords, and (iii) Apocope. The study conclude amongst others, that hybridization of nouns is as a result of incomplete mastery of Ẹdo language.
