ABSTRACT
This project evaluates the activities of the church in Nigeria and its contribution to national development. Christianity came to Nigeria through missionary activities in various parts of the western world and South Africa and was firmly established in the late eighteen century. Today, Christianity is one of the major religions in Nigeria with a significant numerical strength as well as a profound social, economical, political, and religious influence both inside and outside Nigeria. Since its establishment, Christianity has made great achievements in the areas of education, healthcare, and rural development. The activities of Christian missionaries greatly changed the religious landscape in Umundugba, Nigeria, West Africa just surveyed. However, many of the basic features of the indigenous beliefs and practices of the Umnudugba have survived to this day. Among these are a number of important transitional ceremonies with strong religious import. This article has attempted to present a sociocultural context and worldview from which scholars, worldwide, interested in Igbo studies could draw for their effective understanding of the socio-impact of Christianity on Umundugba people of Imo State, some parts of the cultural area, resisted change because they mark and celebrate the significant changes and closures that take place in each individual's life. They constitute a unique set of definitional ceremonies of Umundugba culture and religion. In light of the foregone observations, the following suggestions are offered for continuous critical analysis; It should be tantamount to gross academic misconduct for some scholars to make derogatory and inflammatory remarks on the religious beliefs and practices of other people without an empirical thorough systematic study. This research work made use of historical analytical methods as well as the utilization of books, the internet, journal articles, and oral interview for proper clarity .it is therefore advisable for scholars to make careful observations and use genuine available scientific tools in order to unearth dispassionately the region they are investigating.
