Summary
This work is an attempt to examine the relevance of deities in the practical Benin life, in a society that was believed to have adopted Western orientation and lifestyle. In a culturally dynamic society, the change agents failed to meet the incarnational realities of the people resulting in a life of ambivalence. In order to prove this point, the researcher made use of historical approaches with case studies for more clarification on the subject matter. Ayelala deities which were originally consecrated as gods of war and guardians of morality now assume additional roles.
The study of the work is center on the socio-cultural impact of Ayelala deity on the Benin people. It revealed that deities which governed virtually all aspects of life in the primal Benin society, are still relevant in some aspects of life today. The entire work is designed to deepen awareness of the need for serious reflections on the topic against the backdrop of the popular opinion that deities in Beninland, have become impotent in the encounter with change agents.
