ABSTRACT
This study examined the impact of sporting events on community development in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. The study aimed to investigate the role of sporting events in fostering social cohesion, youth development, gender inclusivity, economic growth, and quality of life. The study adopted a descriptive survey design, and a multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select respondents from the area. A total of 100 questionnaires were administered to residents of Oredo LGA, and all 100 were returned and analyzed. The study found that sporting events have a profound impact on community development in Oredo LGA. The events foster social cohesion, promote youth development, challenge traditional gender stereotypes, stimulate economic growth, and enhance quality of life. The study also found that sporting events provide a platform for community engagement, social interaction, and social change. The study's findings have implications for policymakers, community leaders, and other stakeholders seeking to promote community development through sporting events. The study highlights the importance of investing in sports infrastructure, developing inclusive sporting programs, promoting female role models in sports, and encouraging community engagement and participation in sporting events. Overall, the study demonstrates the critical role that sporting events can play in promoting community development. The study's findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, community leaders, and other stakeholders seeking to harness the power of sports to build stronger, more cohesive communities.
