ABSTRACT
The study is a semantic analysis of personal names using Ọza Aibiokunla dialect in Ọrhiọnmwọn Local Government Area as a case study. It examined the semantic of Ọza Aibiokunla personal names. It also account for the situation that brought such names and also discuss the process that were observed in the data. The research is carried out because African personal names have histories attached to it and at this circumstance and culture influence Oza Aibiokunla names. The study employed primary and secondary source of data collection. The primary source of data collection are oral interview and participant observation in the work.
The data is gathered from the old men and old women above 50 years who have vast experience on naming practices. The theoretical framework for the study was based on basic linguistic theory which help to describe language in its own terms. The data was presented and analyzed using literal and free translation. Oza Aibiokunla personal names cannot be separated from their circumstances and culture. The study also shows that Oza Aibiokunla personal names can convey message from name-giver to the community.
