ABSTRACT

Sand mining refers to the process of removing sand from it's own natural setting. Sand is utilized for a variety of tasks, including coastline stabilization, building artificial islands, and land reclamation. Although these initiatives have positive economic as well as social effects, sand mining can sometimes cause environmental issues. The goal of this study was to analyze the grain size of the soil samples by sieve analysis and the stratigraphy of the subsoil by using the geophysical method (vertical electrical sounding) in the study area. Findings from grain size analysis show that the percentage of sand increased as depth increased, but the percentage of silt and clay decreased slightly at a depth of 10–20 cm. The mean and standard deviation indicate that the sand is extremely fine and very poorly sorted, respectively. The soil samples collected from the two sampling locations are strongly finely-skewed, and the Kurtosis connotation varies from platy Kurtic to Lepo- Kurtic. The phi values for Locations 1 and 2 range from 5.00 to 95.00 and 5.50 to 84.00, respectively. The result of VES 1 revealed six (6) geoelectric layers, while VES 2 revealed seven (7) geoelectric layers. The fourth geoelectric layer of VES 1 and 2 is the sand that is mined in the area, with a variable thickness ranging from 3.9 to 5.4m. Findings also revealed that the depth of groundwater in the area is undetermined.
