ABSTRACT

The study investigated the roles of Social Studies education in conflict resolution among secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and answered.

The descriptive survey research method was adopted for the study. The population for this study was made up of all the 6,117 students in the 20 public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size for the study was made up of 100 students who were randomly selected from five (5) schools in the local government. For data analysis, frequency counts and percentages were used to calculate the research findings.

The findings from the study include that Social Studies play in promoting tolerance and empathy among secondary school students in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. It was concluded that Social Studies play in reducing the occurrence of conflicts among students in secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area by promoting understanding, open dialogue, negotiation skills, and appreciation of diversity among students.The study recommended among others that Social Studies curriculum should be reviewed and enriched to include more practical conflict resolution strategies, peace-building skills, and real-life scenarios. This would better equip students with the necessary tools for managing conflicts both in school and in their communities.
