ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to investigate the Roles of museums and heritage sites in promoting historical understanding among Nigerian students. The instrument employed for data collection was a self-structured questionnaire validated and approved by the project supervisor in the Department of Educational Foundations. The self-structured questionnaire was administered to 50 undergraduate students from 200 level through to 400 level, within the Department of Educational Foundations, Faculty of Education, University of Benin, Edo state, after the validation of the instrument by the project supervisor. The data from their responses were analysed with the use 6 of regression analytic approach of simple percentage. The study concluded that a majority of the students held a favourable view that the museums and heritage sites are important and can help promote historical understanding among students and stimulate their curiosity to learn more about other cultures, if well preserved and safeguarded. To ensure this, the study made two key recommendations. First, it suggests that the government should ensure that these historical sites are adequately funded, to aid their smooth operation. Secondly, it emphasised on transforming our museums into digital spaces to reach a broader audience and make sure students are granted a complimentary access to these sites, to motivate them to keep visiting these historical sites. These recommendations aim to ensure that students understand their history, culture and traditions.
