ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to examine the roles of aqueous stem juice extract of spiral ginger at different concentration on some serum biochemical parameters of rabbit buck. The research was carried out at the Rabbit experimental unit of the University of Benin Farm Project Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The experiment comprises of four treatments level; 0ml, 0.8ml, 1.60ml and 2.4ml and replicated three time on a Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with a total of twenty four mixed breed (Chinchila and Newzealand) domesticated rabbit bucks aged 5 to 6 weeks. Data were collected on some serum biochemical components which include Total protein, Albumin, Globulin, Total Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphate (ALP) (μl), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) (μl), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) (μl), Glucose, Urea and Creatinine. The result shows that stem juice extract of Spiral ginger has significant (p<0.05) effect on total protein level of rabbit buck. The result also indicates that there was an increase in total protein with increase stem juice extract concentration. The lowest (51.33) amount of total protein was recorded in the control group (0ml) while the highest (59.67) was recorded in the group treated with 1.60ml concentration of the stem extract. Stem juice extract had no significant (p>0.05) effect on albumin and globulin, glucose and urea of the rabbit buck. However, the result indicates that Spiral ginger stem juice extract had significant (p<0.05) effect Creatinine of rabbit buck. The result shows that Spiral ginger stem extract had significant effect on Total Bilirubin and ALP of rabbit buck. From the result in this study, 1.60ml concentration of Spiral ginger stem juice extract had significant effect on serum parameters compared to the other concentration. It could therefore be recommended that 1.60ml concentration Spiral ginger stem juice extract be administered to rabbit buck for adequate biochemical function and maximum performance.
