ABSTRACT

This study examined the role of women in entrepreneurship development in Nigeria: a case study of Ovia North-East local government area, Edo State. Specifically, the study evaluated the effect of women entrepreneur’s educational status, access to financial capital, culture and age on business performance. In the light of the main and specific objectives of this study, a descriptive research design was adopted. The study employed questionnaire to elicit information answering the research questions and hypotheses. The instrument was validated by the supervisor of the project and administered to one hundred and fifty respondents from small and medium scale firms domiciled in Benin City, Edo State. Following this, the inferential analysis was used to explain the results of the study; while the ordinary least square regression test-statistic was used to analyse the hypotheses of the study. Ensuing from the analysis, the following were discovered: There is a relationship between women entrepreneur’s educational status and business performance. In the same vein, women entrepreneur’s access to financial capital is positively significant to business performance. There is a relationship between women entrepreneur’s culture and business performance. Lastly, there is a relationship between women entrepreneur’s age and business performance. All the aforementioned findings enjoyed a positive and statistically significant relationship with p values lesser than (>) 0.05. Based on the findings of this work, the study concluded that women entrepreneurs positively affects the performance of a business. Hence the following recommendations were made: There should be policies and frame work put in place to ensure that gender discrimination in regards to access to capital and female entrepreneurs cultural restrictions are looked into. This submission is because increase in female involvement in business is key to societal growth and development which in the long run will contribute positively to the economy at large. Also, the female entrepreneurs need to have some level of education in order to ensure that the business performance is not hampered. Other recommendations were indicated under the ‘Recommendations of the Study’.
