ABSTRACT
The role of Umuada, a traditional assembly of daughters within Igbo society, has undergone significant transformation in post-colonial Nigeria, impacting social, economic, and political spheres. This study explores the multifaceted contributions of Umuada to the development of Igbo communities, focusing on their evolving roles in contemporary society. Historically, Umuada served as custodians of customs, mediators in family disputes, and organizers of communal activities. In the post-colonial era, their influence has expanded to include advocacy for women's rights, participation in local governance, and promotion of educational initiatives. Through qualitative analysis of interviews, archival materials, and case studies, this research highlights how Umuada have navigated the challenges of modernization and globalization while preserving cultural heritage. The findings of this study reveals that Umuada continue to be pivotal in fostering community cohesion, addressing social injustices, and driving local development projects. This study underscores the importance of recognizing and supporting indigenous institutions like Umuada as vital components in the socio-economic progress of post-colonial Nigerian societies.
