ABSTRACT
This study examines the role of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in resolving the Bakassi conflict between Cameroon and Nigeria. The ICJ's judgment in 2002 awarded sovereignty over the disputed territory to Cameroon, marking a significant milestone in the conflict's resolution. This research analyzes the ICJ's jurisdiction, legal framework, and decision-making process in the case, highlighting the Court's contribution to peaceful dispute resolution and the promotion of international law. The study adopted primary, secondary and multidisciplinary methods, including government reports, policy documents, academic articles, newspaper, internet materials, journal and books. The study reveals that the ICJ played a crucial role in resolving the conflict, providing a legal basis for the transfer of sovereignty and facilitating a peaceful settlement. The findings underscore the importance of international judicial mechanisms in resolving border disputes and promoting regional peace and stability. The study also recommends that in order to settle border conflicts amicably, states should use international judicial settlement institutions like the International Court of Justice (ICJ) more frequently to resolve boundary disputes peacefully, other peaceful means of resolving disputes, such as mediation, arbitration, and diplomatic negotiations, should be added to the ICJ's role in dispute resolution and the international community should support and strengthen the ICJ's ability to contribute to peaceful conflict resolution, promoting the rule of law and stability in international relations.
