ABSTRACT
The advent of social media in the 21 st century ushered in a new era of communication, information dissemination and political engagement globally. Social media made the world a global village which has impacted various facets of our everyday lives. The project aimed at exploring the positive role of social media on the democratic processes in Nigeria from 2011 to 2023 by examining the advent of social media. Its rise in Nigeria and the role it plays in Nigerian democracy. It was established that the development of computers and the internet led to the birth of social media. Six Degrees was the first recognizable social networking site and before it, were tools referred to as groupware. Six Degrees became a foundation for the numerous 77 social media apps and sites that were established after it. From year 2000 upwards, a wave of social networking sites emerged starting with the creation of Friendster. Friendster was successful and paved the way for the other social sites that began emerging. Now there are various niches in the social networking world which include media sharing apps, question and idea sharing apps, music listening apps, dating apps and video watching apps.
