THE ROLE OF MASS MEDIA IN THE INDUSTRIAL CRISIS RESOLUTION OF THE ACADEMIC STAFF UNION OF UNIVERSITIES AND THE GOVERNMENT IN 2022

ABSTRACT

The Mass Media is now considered a social institution that finds a functional place within every social institution to foster social interaction, exchange and sustenance of society. This study proved the role of the mass media in the industrial crisis resolution of ASUU and the Government in 2022. The study was anchored on the Structural-functional theory, agenda setting and media dependency theory. Using the survey method, and questionnaire as instrument; a total of 100 students from Mass Communication department, University of Benin were selected. Findings revealed that the reliability and accuracy of the information provided by the mass media, the addressing of the root causes of the industrial crisis and, the effectiveness of the strategies adopted by the media are all factors that contributed to the facilitation of a resolution. It was recommended that the media should sufficiently reveal the root causes of any industrial crisis exhaustively, platforms for involvement and education of community members on the crisis should be provided, messages across social platforms and online platforms should be regulated and efforts should be made to find a balance for ASUU’s actions to reduce casualties.
