ABSTRACT
The research examines the role of guidance and counselling services in suicide prevention among undergraduates in the University of Benin. The variables of the study are roles of guidance and counselling services in suicide prevention among undergraduates’ students in the University of Benin. The study was guided by four research questions.
The study adopted the survey research design. The population of the study comprised 3832 students of Faculty of Education. The sample consists of one hundred and twenty that were randomly selected from four departments. The instrument used for data collection is the questionnaire which was self-designed by the researcher. Data collected were analysed with mean and standard deviation.
Based on the findings that emerged from the study, the result showed that the role of guidance and counselling services in suicide prevention among undergraduates in the University of Benin is positive. The study therefore recommend that Guidance and Counselling centre should as a matter of necessity improve on follow-up care to students who are at risk of suicide. This will help prevent relapse into suicidal ideation and incidence of suicide. The University’s Guidance and Counsellor Centre should intensify effort in form of regular engagement of students through different forum; seminar, workshops, campus-wide campaign aimed at dispelling notions that tend to attach stigma to seeking counselling services for range of issues, especially suicide.
